Several varieties cultivated by different types of oysters:
White South Sea Pearl – originating found in Australia and cultivated by white – lipped oysters, they are mainly white but can also be found in natural colour like golden yellow.
Black South Sea Pearl – originally from the French Tahitian islands and also called Tahitian pearls, they are produced by black – lipped oysters.
Sea Water Pearl – originally found in the South China Sea and the Sea of Japan, they are mainly white in colour.
Fresh Water Pearl – originally found in rivers such as the Yangtze in eastern China, they are among the most popular varieties in the world today.
