Maintaining pearl quality is a matter of following several simple dos and don’ts

DO deep pearls away from of other jewellery to prevent scratches or other damage
DO place a glass of water next to pearls that are exposed under spotlights
DO clean with distilled water after use
DO restring pearl strands periodically to prevent string breakage
DON’T spray perfumes on pearls directly
DON’T clean pearls using an ultrasonic cleaner or ammonia solution
DON’T wear pearls while in swimming pools or hot springs

Following these basic rules will ensure that each piece of pearl jewellery will maintain its lustre for many years.
